Announced during the closing months of 1976 as an addition to the 1977 model range, the SP 1600 was reputed to be the first production twin-carburettor Beetle ever. This model was unique to South Africa and formed part of a strategy by VWSA to introduce limited edition Beetles into the marketplace to boost sales.
Originally advertised as available in three bright colours, red, yellow and silver only, some white examples have also been noted as well as the recent discovery that 50 black examples were built with each of the owners being presented with a special certificate. The seats had colour–keyed tartan inserts and it featured many luxury items as standard. These included low profile 185/70 SR x 14 radial ply tyres on 5,5 J Rostyle wheelrims, chrome mini trims, a glassfibre front-end spoiler, centre console with a short sports-style gear lever, full instrumentation and a special exhaust system amongst others. The body had special “SP” side and roof flashes to complete the sporty package.
There is no date when production stopped but I would think sometime late 1977 or very early 1978. Only 3096 were built and sold.
